The R (Residente) visa is Colombian permanent residency. Once you have it, you can live and work in Colombia indefinitely without further immigration applications, work for any employer or run any business, and move toward Colombian citizenship. It's the final step in the Colombian immigration ladder for most long-term residents.

Who qualifies for the R visa

The "continuous" requirement

Continuous M visa time means your visas must have been valid without gaps. A gap between visa expiration and renewal — even a short one — can interrupt the accumulation period and require you to start counting again.

Colombian immigration does not automatically notify you before your visa expires. Track your own expiration dates and begin the renewal process at least 60-90 days before expiry.

Required documents for the R visa

Application fee: ~$52 USD. Issuance fee: ~$252 USD. Processing: 4-10 weeks.

What permanent residency means practically

Path to Colombian citizenship

After five years of valid R visa (permanent residency), you become eligible for Colombian naturalization. Timeline: approximately ten years from first M visa to citizenship (five years M + five years R), or eight years for the M-CA spouse/partner path (three years M-CA + five years R).

Colombia allows dual citizenship. You do not need to renounce your current citizenship to become Colombian. For citizens of countries that require renunciation of other citizenships when naturalizing elsewhere, consult with both your country's citizenship authorities and a Colombian attorney before proceeding.

Maintaining your permanent residency

The main risk to permanent residency is extended absence from Colombia. The two-year continuous absence rule is the most common cause of involuntary status loss. If you know you'll be out of Colombia for an extended period, consult with an immigration attorney about maintaining your status.
